Sometimes, the need to update content on your website can be quite challenging for a number of different reasons.  The challenge can be as complex as having to come up with some creative and new content each time, or it may just be due to the fact that you forgot where you hid your login information.  But, whatever the reason may be, your website isn’t something that you can simply put out of site and out of mind, as it does require regular maintenance with up-to-date, relevant information.  After all, that’s your portal directly to your audience, so you want to make it count!

The fact is, over time your business and your website will inevitably, though gradually, step out of sync.  Your methods, services, and goals will change or evolve over time and so must your site. Your business objectives may alter so much so that your website is no longer even representative of the message you want to put out there.  So, imagine what visitors are actually getting out of your website. When they click on your page, what do they learn? Are they seeing dated information? Is your content so dated that they’re seeing an incorrect or entirely skewed representation of your business?  These are all questions that should constantly be on your radar.

Fortunately, there are things that you can do right now to update and improve your website to ensure that everything remains in sync.  Here are just a few small adjustments you can make today that will have a positive and lasting impact on your website:

  • Splash Image – When most people click on your website, they’ll see the splash image on your homepage.  So, update this welcome image to something new and inviting. This will let visitors know that you’ve been making updates, and they’ll be more likely to stay and click around.
  • Links – One of the most overlooked elements on websites is the check for broken links.  Whether by someone on your team or by the computer system itself, website content changes all the time.  So, be sure to scan your entire site for broken links, and fix them.
  • Forms – Most websites have at least a “Contact Us” form, so make sure that it and any other forms your visitors might fill out are still in top working order.  It’s important to conduct regular tests of these, as they’re an integral element in the lead capture process. Take time to review all content in each form on your site, and send a filled in test form to yourself.  Make sure that all information is still accurate, that the forms don’t ask for too much information, and that they operate properly when submitted.
  • Staff Information – If you have a page that features all of your staff, make sure that the information is up to date and accurate.  Often, people move about positions within a company, so make sure that these changes are known. This also includes updating any individual accomplishments, accolades or awards.
  • Accolades – If your company recently received any awards or special recognitions, make sure to update this news on your website.  This includes exciting new contracts, certifications, press releases, etc. – anything that your company should be bragging about that will help to impress visitors and make them want to work with you.

By simply making these quick updates to your website, you can not only improve the quality of the site itself but improve the overall experience for the user by engaging them with new material.  Just don’t forget where you hid those login passwords!
