Websites are hacked each and every day, and in some cases, the website owner does not even realize it. Unless you’re watching your content closely, it’s easy to miss. Oftentimes, these hackers will even put viruses into the websites that they hack, which not only harms your business, but impacts your visitors, as well. That is one of the reasons that you find us talking about security so often here on our blog. Keeping your website, your network, your data, and your equipment secure should away be a top priority. So, with that in mind, here are a few tips for keeping your website safe from hackers.

How to Protect Your Website from Hackers

Use an Email, Not a Username

WordPress, in particular, gives you the choice between using a username or your email to log into your account. Using an email address has been proven to be an extra obstacle for hacking, and hey – every little bit helps!

Set Up a Website Lockdown Feature

A lockdown feature will block your account after a certain number of failed attempts. it also notifies you that someone is trying to break into the account.

Use a Randomly Generated Password

If you want the ultimate in security, then make sure to use a randomly selected password. This is going to help you keep your website safe. Make sure to write it down somewhere safe so you don’t get locked out.

Using a generator to make passwords is always a good way to get the most secure passwords out there, as they are random, with many numbers, letters and special characters that are extremely hard for a hacker to guess.

Have a Creative Login URL

You can choose the URL you use to log into your account. You can change this right in the settings, or you can download a plugin that helps you change the login URL at the end of your website name. Again, this is just another obstacle for hackers. (Make sure you remember what that new URL is, though!)

Secure Your Hosting Setup

Your security doesn’t just stop at your WordPress site. You want to secure your hosting, as well. This can be done through the use of the settings, and your hosting provider will likely be happy to help you with that. Make sure you have extra security on all of your domains and that you have encrypted files with each of them. You can never be too cautious!

Always Have Backups of Your Website

You should always ensure that your website is being backed up – not just to protect you from hackers, but from anything that could go wrong, in general. For hacking, specifically – if you get into a bind with malicious content on your website, you may have to wipe it clean and start fresh. If that happens, a backup will give you a shot at salvaging at least some portion (in not all) of the hard work and money that you have poured into your site.
